The manga, authored by Yun Kouga (高河ゆん), has been published in Japanese magazine Comic Zero-Sum since 2002. It is not finished yet. In 2005 Loveless was adapted into a 12-episode anime series. The protagonist of the series is a twelve year old boy Aoyagi Ritsuka, who lost his memory two years ago. The only person who loved and cared about Ritsuka was his older brother Seimei, but after Seimei's mysterious death Ritsuka is left all alone, with an exception of his mentally ill mother.
Ritsuka transferres to a new school, when he meets Agatsuma Soubi. Soubi, first introduced as a friend of Seimei, claims he was Seimei's "Fighter". To Ritsuka's surprise, Soubi says he would now fight for Ritsuka and serve him.
