The story follows the monster hunter (witcher
) Geralt of Rivia
as he tries to protect Ciri
, a child princess from Cintra kingdom, from... well, from everyone.
Ciri is a precious trophy, because she's the carrier of Hen Ichaer ("Elder Blood"), which is the ancient and incredibly powerful elven gene. She inherited magic abilities from elven ancestors, particularly from a legendary sorceress Lara Dorren. Many years ago, Lara fell in love with a human, and their union produced a lineage of people with superior genes. Most importantly, it was prophesied that Lara Dorren's descendant will give birth to The Destroyer who will obliterate the habitable world, while having the ability so save it: "The world will die amidst frost and be reborn with the new sun. It will be reborn of Elder Blood, of Hen Ichaer, of the seed that has been sown". Ciri is believed to be the person from the Prophecy - either The Destroyer herself or his potential mother. She is hunted by many, including sorcerers, elves, spies and the mighty Nilfgaardian emperor Emhyr.

Blood of Elves
The first novel, Blood of Elves (Polish: Krew elfów), begins with Cintra's plunder by Nilfgaardian army. Geralt of Rivia, the witcher, accidentally saves young princess Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon (Ciri) without knowing who she really is, and he takes her to the witchers' citadel Kaer Morhen. The girl is then trained by witchers. They no nothing except monster hunt and combat and therefore cannot teach Ciri any skills except those, so she becomes a proficient fighter. Soon they discover her magical abilities. Geralt invites a sorceress Triss Merigold, his old friend, to give some advise on the situation and perhaps to teach Ciri magic. Triss is, however, scared of what she sees in the girl. She insists that Ciri needs a better mentor, and that should be Yennefer of Vengerberg, the former beloved of Geralt. Although they parted on bad terms, Geralt reluctantly agrees. Ciri studies under Yennefer's control. After initial hatred towards each other, partially explained by jealousy from both sides, Yennefer becomes a second mother to Ciri. It's obvious that they are fiercely attached to one another. At the same time Nilfgaardian emperor continues his search for Ciri.
Time of Contempt
In Time of Contempt (Polish: Czas pogardy) Yennefer takes Ciri, who is now about 13-14 years old, to Aretuza magical academy located at the Isle of Thanedd. After a huge fight Yennefer is also united with Geralt, who decided to accompany her to the mages' meeting held on Thanedd. The planned reunion between the mages from Nilfgaardian Empire and the Northern Kingdoms is ruined, however, by ambitious Vilgefortz of Roggeveen. He attacks the Northern mages and starts a rebellion (an event later known as the Thanedd coup). Eventually Yennefer is imprisoned by her mage colleagues as a probable supporter of Vilgefortz (by mistake). Geralt fights with Vilgefortz, but loses, and Ciri escapes through half-destroyed tower with a magic portal. Although Tor Lara tower's portal is considered unstable and extremely dangerous, Ciri's bloodline helps her to pass through it easily. Vilgefortz tries to stop her, but the portal explodes, and the sorcerer looses an eye. Ciri is transported to the Korath desert and barely survives, losing most of her magic. She joins a brutal gang of the Rats, introducing herself as "Falka".
Baptism of Fire
In Baptism of Fire (Polish: Chrzest ognia) Yennefer escapes and starts looking for Ciri. Geralt is being healed by dryads of the Brokilon forest. As soon as he's capable of holding a weapon he rushes to Ciri's rescue, as she's believed to be imprisoned in Nilfgaard. It's explained that the Nilfgaardian emperor Emhyr found a girl of similar age and similar appearance to use as a substitute, while secretly searching for real Ciri. To put it briefly, Emhyr knows the Prophecy (destruction of the world, see explanation above), and believes that he has to marry Ciri for the sake of the future, because his and Ciri's grandchild will become the emperor, will rule the world and will save it from destruction. Geralt travels to Nilfgaard accompanied by a bard nicknamed Dandelion (his old and trusted friend) and a female archer Milva from Brokilon. Meanwhile Ciri actually leads a nonchalant life as "Falka" with the Rats, becoming a cruel murderer and never giving it a second thought.
In Swallow's Tower (Polish: Wieża Jaskółki) the entire gang of Rats is slaughtered by a cruel bounty hunter Leo Bonhart. Bonhart keeps Ciri alive because he is intrigued by her "witcher-esque" combat skills and is strangely attracted to her in his own way. He uses the girl as his personal slave and a gladiator to fight at his cousin's arena. After continuous abuse Ciri manages to escape through another magic portal. Meanwhile Geralt is still looking for her. He comes across an old vampire Emiel Regis, a former Nilfgaardian knight Cahir aep Ceallach and a young robber girl named Angouleme. They also join him on the quest and form "The Geralt's gang" (Geralt's Hansa), as Angouleme humorously puts it. Yennefer searches for Ciri and falls into Vilgefortz's trap. She is eventually captured by Vilgefortz, who obsesses over Ciri's powers. He tortures Yennefer, trying to find out Ciri's whereabouts.
Lady of the Lake
In the last novel Lady of the Lake
(Polish: Pani Jeziora
) Ciri teleports to another dimension. It is the world of Aen Elle (People of the Alder
), mighty elves. They predicted her forthcoming. Their scientist Avallac'h explains that People of the Alder need Ciri to retrieve Lara Dorren's precious genes. They recon that Ciri's child, who's going to carry those genes, is necessary to save the world from destruction (mentioned in the Prophecy). The child is predicted to have abilities a thousandfold stronger than elven magic or even Ciri's powers. With such powers People of the Alder will be able to open the gates between worlds, let all elves and even humans pass through to their dimension, and save them from certain death. They tell Ciri that she must stay with People of the Alder and bear a child from their king Auberon
, and they promise to let her go after that. As a gesture of goodwill, Avallac'h shows Ciri the location of Yennefer and Vilgefortz. Ciri tries to escape but in the end has no other options but to agree to stay with the elves. Auberon makes several unsuccessful and humiliating for Ciri attempts to impregnate her, until unicorns help her to run away. Ciri travels between worlds and makes her way to Vilgefortz's castle to save Yennefer (Avallac'h showed her the location). Geralt with his "hansa"
, with an exception of Dandelion who decided to stay behind, arrive almost at the same time to massacre the guards. All "hansa" members die, but their combined effort is enough to kill Vilgefortz. For a brief moment Geralt reunites with Ciri and Yennefer, only to loose Ciri again to Nilfgaardian soldiers. Emhyr arrives with his army. It turns out that he is Ciri's biological father, yet still very determined to marry her. However in the end he's unable to force her into incest, so he lets all of them go. The book ends with Geralt and Dandelion waiting for Ciri and Yennefer in a tavern in Rivia. Some minor unlucky event sparks off an interracial brawl. Yennefer and Triss stop the riot with a spell later known as Merigold's Hailstorm
, but Geralt is mortally wounded by the peasants who mistook him for an elf. Yennefer loses consciousness while trying to heal him with powerful magic. It doesn't help, Geralt is dying. Ciri then calls a boat, puts bodies of Geralt and Yennefer in it and disappears in the mist, transporting them to some parallel world (outcome similar to the Arthurian legend
). Author does not reveal whether the characters lived or died. Opinions are divided amongst fans, I suppose the latter is the most probable outcome. It's implied that Ciri stays in another world forever.
