... it is into his [Andrzej Sapkowski] unique world of pervasive magic, bitter conflict, and occasional dark humor, that you will be immersed.
Sapkowski's saga includes the following novels: Blood of Elves (original: Krew elfów), Time of Contempt (original: Czas pogardy), Baptism of Fire (original: Chrzest ognia), Swallow's Tower (original: Wieża Jaskółki), Lady of the Lake (original: Pani Jeziora). The books have been adapted into a movie and television series, graphic novels, video games and etc. The Witcher short stories and novels have been translated into many languages.
Geralt of Rivia
is the main protagonist of the series. He is a person of integrity, but also a complex character who evolves over time. He was born from the druidess healer Visenna and a mercenary named Korin.
Visenna gave her son to the witchers, and he was raised at their citadel Kaer Morhen (lit. "Fortress of the Old Sea"). He is a witcher, a mercenary specializing in the removal of hexes and the slaying of monsters and other supernatural beings.
Witchers don't get normal childhood. Every single child has to be trained brutally: dexterity exercises, fencing, monsters research, and more. Certain mushrooms and herbs are added to the food to improve metabolism. All children undergo the painful process of mutation to gain superhuman abilities that are necessary to fight monsters. All of them go through The Trial of the Herbs during which children are given multiply injections of strong elixirs. It considerably changes their metabolism, endocrine and nervous system. It is an extremely dangerous process.
As a matter of fact, only 4 out of 10 people can survive the procedure, only to become sterile as a side effect. The few survivors become truly extraordinary fighters.
Geralt was one of the lucky ones. He passed the Trial of the Herbs so well that he had been subjected to even deeper mutations. Therefore it's possible that Geralt is the strongest witcher alive. After completing his training in Kaer Morhen, he was awarded with a wolf mediallion. Combined with his pale skin and white hair, Geralt became known as Gwynbleidd, the White Wolf
.
Geralt's name was given to him by his mother Visenna, although he initially believed that he had been named by his old instructor Vesemir. Despite his name, Geralt didn't come from Rivia. He decided to call himself of Rivia because such appendix helped to build credibility with potential employers. He said that "Geralt of Rivia" sounded more trustworthy than 'Geralt from nowhere'.
To further strengthen his abilities Geralts drinks various elixirs, which are extremely poisonous and deadly to ordinary people. Andrzej Sapkowski mentions only three elixirs in the novels: White Gull, a sort of soft alcoholic beverage for witchers, Black Gull, a strong hallucinogen, and Oriole from ptomaine poisoning.
Geralt had a long lasting relationship with Yennefer of Vengerberg, a powerful magician. She appears in the short story Last Wish described as a woman of outstanding beauty (magnificent black hair, tempting body) and equally great cunning. Initially very cold-hearted, Yennefer warms up to Geralt over time. She is wise, cynical and authoritative, but she is capable of very strong devotion and love. After several attempts to break up, Geralt and Yennefer rejoin in the last book of the series.
A travelling bard nicknamed Dandelion (the real name is unknown) is Geralt's best friend and the most loyal companion. He had written numerous ballads and verses, fragments of which are cited in the novels. He represents a bright contrast to the protagonist: he doesn't know how to fight and cannot defend himself at all, he is talkative, easy going and amorous. He tries to seduce almost every woman he sees. Dandelion makes an appearance in all TV series and The Witcher video dames.
Like most witchers, Geralt tries to avoid complicated relationships, politics and court schemes, although many do try to involve him for obvious reasons: it could be pretty useful to have such a fighter at your side. Although many people try to use Geralt in their intrigues, he does his best to keep neutrality stating that "To be neutral doesn't mean to be indifferent and insensible. It does not require killing all feelings inside you. You just have to kill the hatred".
